Son ascension sera fulgurante, et la ville d\u00e9passera rapidement en taille Lisbonne ou m\u00eame Londres. Afin d\u2019impressionner et de tenter de convertir un maximum d\u2019indig\u00e8nes, les Portugais s\u2019en donneront \u00e0 c\u0153ur joie sur la construction d\u2019\u00e9glises. \u00c0 tel point qu\u2019une p\u00e9tition sera bient\u00f4t envoy\u00e9e \u00e0 Rome pour demander de ralentir un peu le rythme&nbsp;: les lieux de culte sont tellement rapproch\u00e9s que r\u00e8gne une v\u00e9ritable cacophonie quand les v\u00eapres viennent \u00e0 sonner. Mais las, la chute sera tout aussi rapide&nbsp;: \u00e0 peine plus de deux si\u00e8cles apr\u00e8s la pose des premi\u00e8res pierres, la malaria et le chol\u00e9ra auront raison de la ville, la capitale est alors transf\u00e9r\u00e9e \u00e0 Panaji, et Goa, devenue Vieux-Goa, est d\u00e9sert\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cinq cents ans plus tard, ne demeure ici-bas qu\u2019un \u00e9tonnant maillage de superbes \u00e9glises au milieu d\u2019espaces verts et de boutiques de souvenirs. Certaines sont particuli\u00e8rement bien conserv\u00e9es, et proposent toujours des offices r\u00e9guliers, notamment l\u2019immacul\u00e9e cath\u00e9drale et la sombre basilique du Bom Jesus, contenant les tr\u00e8s v\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s restes incorruptibles de Saint Fran\u00e7ois Xavier. D\u2019autres ne sont plus que ruines photog\u00e9niques. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quoi qu\u2019il en soit, c\u2019\u00e9tait aussi l\u2019occasion de s\u2019essayer \u00e0 la conduite d\u2019un scooter sur les d\u00e9licates routes indiennes, Vieux-Goa \u00e9tant distant d\u2019environ 45 kilom\u00e8tres, et les transports en commun n\u2019\u00e9tant pas pl\u00e9thores (le trajet n\u00e9cessitait trois heures et deux changements, merci bien). Bon, j\u2019ai visiblement surv\u00e9cu, puisque je suis en mesure d\u2019\u00e9crire cet article. Mais de l\u00e0 \u00e0 pr\u00e9tendre que c\u2019\u00e9tait une partie de plaisir\u2026 Disons que la moindre fraction de seconde d\u2019inattention peut \u00eatre fatale, puisqu\u2019il faut composer avec les nids-de-poule, les vaches sacr\u00e9es, les chiens errants, la conduite \u00e0 gauche, et surtout les nombreux conducteurs persuad\u00e9s d\u2019\u00eatre s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s pour le prochain championnat de formule 1 (sachant que de toute fa\u00e7on la vitesse moyenne d\u00e9passe p\u00e9niblement les 30-40 km\/h).
